During a Tuesday night appearance on The Beat with Ari Melber, the Fahrenheit 9/11 director threw his support behind Biden’s decision to end the decades-long war in Afghanistan and the presence of American troops in the country. “I think that I’m so proud of President Biden — who I did not vote for in the Michigan primary; I voted for and I worked for Bernie Sanders — and I have been completely surprised and feeling we’re all blessed to have Joe Biden in the White House in these last months,” Moore said.
“He wouldn’t walk it back. He just said, ‘No this is wrong. I promised you when I ran for office, I’m pulling those troops out. This war is going on way too long.’ And it’s exactly what he did. A politician kept his word.”
Moore described the withdrawal as “crazy” but said that most withdrawals and evacuation war efforts have been, before sharing his condolences over the lives lost in the past few weeks.
“You can have the discussion of how crazy it went at the end, but all evacuations — from Dunkirk, before and after — [have],” he said. “I mean, Churchill is considered a hero with Dunkirk. There were 15,000 allied lives lost in trying to evacuate those soldiers off that beach in France at the beginning of World War II. It never goes right, it never goes well.”
President Biden promised that by August 31, “if there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay to get them all out.” President Biden did not keep that promise. Of course, if President Biden had ever been interested in keeping promises, then everyone would have been out, in an orderly fashion, on the actual deadline of May 1, before the Taliban even launched their doomsday blitz. President Biden uselessly extended the occupation long enough to needlessly get another thirteen troops killed, then abandoned countless US civilians at the mercy of the Taliban. This was no Dunkirk.
Moreover, the military hardware abandoned to the Taliban by the Biden Administration is already proliferating internationally. Michael Moore–who has issues with the Second Amendment–has little to say about the fact that President Biden recently opened up the world’s largest international jihadi terrorist arms bourse, other than to perpetuate the “chaos was inevitable” narrative.
The chaos absolutely was not inevitable. We could have gotten the 100,000+ US and international civilians, plus all of our troops, out by May 1. With all of our people out of the way, once the Afghan National Army began to collapse, we could have put a rocket on every piece of military hardware left behind. We could have demolished all the bases and facilities. If we really did want to scrap the Doha Agreement in a sensible manner, then once the Taliban launched their offensive in May, we could have obliterated them from the sky. We could have covered the Afghan National Army. The Afghan national government could still be standing. Or we could be covering the Panjshir Resistance.
