Lawmakers Set To Grill Top Military Leaders On Afghanistan For First Time Since Troop Withdrawal

CNN:

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley are set to testify publicly before Senate lawmakers Tuesday, marking the first time that top military officials will appear before Congress since the full withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

Austin and Milley will be joined by the leader of US Central Command, Gen. Frank McKenzie, who played an integral role in facilitating the evacuation from Kabul — an effort that has been the focus of immense bipartisan criticism since the last American military aircraft departed the Afghan capital.

All three officials will undoubtedly face questions about the chaotic nature of the withdrawal, be pressed to explain the Biden administration’s plan for conducting counter-terrorism missions in the country going forward and be called upon to answer for the failures that led to a drone strike killing 10 civilians, including seven children, in Kabul during the final days of the evacuation.

Milley may also be grilled about new reporting in “Peril,” a book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, which details the military leader’s phone conversations to reassure a nervous Chinese general and his efforts to limit then-President Donald Trump from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike.

Milley’s actions, which were reported by CNN and others earlier this month ahead of the book’s release, spawned sharp criticism from Trump and his allies, including calls for Milley’s resignation and that he be tried for treason.

I want to know who first recommended that we botch the May 1 deadline, and wait until fighting season to start the withdrawal.

Syrian FM: U.S. Should Pull Out From Syria Before Too Late

CGTN:

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said the U.S. should pull out from his country before it’s too late.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he toldChina Media Group (CMG)that lessons should be learned from last month’s Afghanistan withdrawal, which he described as “an absolutely humiliation for the United States and its allies.”

Women Enslaved By ISIS Say They Did Not Consent To A Film About Them

New York Times:

The film, “Sabaya,” from Sweden, won the prestigious Sundance Film Festival award for best director of a foreign documentary this year and opened the Human Rights Film Festival last week in Berlin. Critics gave it glowing reviews; its real-life scenes of car chases and rescue attempts are as dramatic as any fictional thriller.

But the film has upset some of the very people it was intended to celebrate: women from Iraq’s Yazidi religious minority who were sexually enslaved by the Islamic State terrorist group for years and who are the main subjects. They and their advocates say it violated the rights of women, who had already been denied virtually all control over their lives, to decide whether they want images used.

After the fall of ISIS in 2019, some 60,000 women and children from territories that had been under the terrorist group’s control were crammed into the teeming camp. They included hundreds of Yazidi women who were forced to continue living with the families of the fighters who had enslaved them, even though most of those fighters had been killed in battle by that time.

“These are people who were kidnapped at a very young age and who were held as slaves and sexually abused for five years,” said Peter Galbraith, a former U.S. ambassador who helped reunite more than a dozen Yazidi women with their young children who had been taken away from them. The Yazidi community in Iraq does not allow women to bring back children fathered by ISIS fighters.

“I don’t see how, in those circumstances, they have given informed consent,” Mr. Galbraith added, saying even if they had, they most likely did not understand the full repercussions of it.

John Bolton Warns Taliban May Get Nuclear Weapons Amid Afghanistan Withdrawal

New York Post:

“The Taliban in control of Afghanistan threatens the possibility of terrorists taking control of Pakistan … that means maybe 150 nuclear weapons in the hands of terrorists,”  Bolton told John Catsimatidis in an interview on his WABC 770 radio show on Sunday.

“China, which already has a lot of influence in Pakistan, is going to increase its influence and put more pressure on India. This is a big development in that part of the world,” he continued.

The chickenhawks cannot let go of Afghanistan. They will not rest until our troops are bogged down there in yet another forever war.

How Afghanistan’s Security Forces Lost The War

Stars and Stripes:

By late July, the Taliban was closing in on nearly all the country’s provincial capitals. Afghan security forces that hadn’t been killed by the Taliban had deserted or repeatedly fled, steadily retreating from remote outposts into city centers.

Those who remained on the country’s front lines were some of the least capable.

“The Taliban are everywhere now, even inside the city,” said Obidullah Bilal, a wounded policeman in Kandahar’s central hospital. He was driving an unarmored police truck through eastern Kandahar to resupply a checkpoint when he was caught by a Taliban ambush.

“It’s because of our leadership that we are in this position,” he said, referring to the massive territorial losses the government had suffered in a matter of weeks. “Our leaders sell our checkpoints,” he said. “They’ve already sold our blood.”

One police commander said the only men from his unit willing to hold positions against the Taliban were drug addicts.

“It keeps them awake,” said Mirza Wali, a police commander attending the funeral for one of his men, Nik Mohammad, who had been killed by the Taliban ambush the night before.

Mohammad was estranged from his family because of his meth addiction, but his sister and mother, Taj Bibi, attended the funeral. They both sat in the shade of a truck a few meters from where Mohammad’s coffin was being covered with earth.

“The addicts are the only one who can stand being on the front line,” Wali said. “If they weren’t using drugs, they would go crazy.”

US Leadership Was Aware Of Real Situation In Afghanistan, Says Russia’s Intel Chief

TASS:

“What happened in Afghanistan with the hasty departure and escape of the puppet government is a result of the destructive policy of America, which had attempted to impose its own social development model on Afghanistan,” [Director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey] Naryshkin said.

“The truth is that the United States can no longer play the role of a global hegemon,” he stressed.

Afghan Resistance Mulls Formation Of Government In Exile

Foreign Policy:

The leaders of Afghanistan’s armed resistance against the Taliban have left the country and are regrouping with former senior figures of the toppled Ghani administration with the aim of forming a government in exile.

Politicians including ministers and parliamentary deputies of the deposed government, as well as senior military figures, are in neighboring Tajikistan, seeking financial and military support to bolster a formal opposition to the extremists who took control of Afghanistan on Aug. 15, former officials living abroad said. Ahmad Massoud, son of a famed resistance leader, and former Afghan Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who both led a short-lived resistance in the Panjshir Valley northeast of Kabul, fled across the border in recent weeks after their efforts to hold out against the Taliban were crushed.

Leaders To UN: A Warmer World Is A More Violent One, Too

ABC News:

Using apocalyptic images, three presidents and seven foreign ministers warned Thursday that a warmer world is also a more violent one.

At a ministerial meeting of the Security Council, the officials urged the U.N.’s most powerful body to do more to address the security implications of climate change and make global warming a key part of all U.N. peacekeeping operations.

The leaders and ministers pushing for more U.N. action said warming is making the world less safe, pointing to Africa’s conflict-plagued Sahel region and Syria and Iraq as examples..

The Security Council first discussed the impact of climate on peace and security in 2007 and has held a number of meetings about it since, most recently in February. But it remains off the council’s agenda because of divisions among members. That means there can be no legally binding resolutions or official requests for action.

For years, academics who study conflict and climate change have been highlighting how events like a once-in-a-millennium Syrian drought have exacerbated conflicts without being the sole causes. It’s a more nuanced approach to understanding conflict — and to developing tools that reduce its impact on societies.

Russian and Chinese diplomats reiterated their countries’ objections to putting climate change on the agenda of the council, which is charged with maintaining international peace and security, when other U.N. and international forums are addressing the entire climate issue.

According to the theory now being peddled by the same Western leaders who started all the wars, the real culprit is Global Warming. They say Global Warming caused the “once-in-a-millennium Syrian drought” of 2007-2010, which caused mass migration from rural communities to Syria’s cities, which caused the civil unrest, which turned into a decade of civil war.

What actually happened in real life is that after 2001, Syria’s secular dictator Assad was our ally in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). After various shenanigans on both sides, the US and Syria broke ties in 2005. The trouble stemmed from the fact that Assad would not allow his secularism to break the Shiite Crescent. Assad, and many in Syria’s ruling elite, are Alawite Shiites. They are not Twelver Shiites like the rulers of Iran, but they are Shiites, and so are a majority of people in Iraq. The ruling elite of Saddam Hussein’s government mostly belonged to Iraq’s Sunni minority. When we destroyed Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003, we effectively delivered Iraq to Iran on a silver platter. We quickly realized our mistake. No later than 2006, the Bush Administration devised The Redirection–a foreign policy arc in which the US would switch sides in the GWOT and use al-Qaeda as our ground force to break the Shiite Crescent. The Bush Administration began pouring millions of dollars into Syrian opposition groups in 2006. The Obama-Biden Administration continued the policy but they also gave Syria one last chance. Although Syria was on the list, the Obama-Biden Administration wanted to skip ahead to Iran. In early 2010, Hillary Clinton went on a whirlwind tour throughout the Middle East with the goal of isolating Iran. She asked Syria to cut ties with Iran, and Syria said no. The Obama-Biden Administration beat the drums of war throughout 2010. Yet the Shiite Crescent was still too strong. It was not yet time for Operation Iranian Freedom. We had to get back to the list. We could not march to Tehran with Assad in our flank. Likewise, the secular Arab dictators in Libya and Egypt would have also caused problems. And so the State Department-financed “pro-democracy activists” started a simultaneous wave of civil unrest in the last remaining secular Arab republics. We put the Muslim Brotherhood in charge of Egypt, we used NATO as al-Qaeda’s air force in Libya, and in Syria/Iraq we launched Operation Timber Sycamore to transform al-Qaeda into a multi-national Salafist caliphate. The Obama-Biden Administration’s jihadi terrorists lynched Gaddafi and plundered his arsenals, spreading chaos and conflict throughout the Sahel. Our schemes in Syria were soundly thwarted by Russia and Iran, however we continue pouring resources onto various combatants, just to keep the death and chaos going. President Trump attempted to end our absolutely insane policy in Syria, but the Establishment revolted. Now the same cast of characters from the Obama-Biden Administration have returned for service in the Biden Administration. The same people who deliberately orchestrated the greatest humanitarian catastrophe since World War II want you to believe that it was not their policies which got hundreds of thousands of people killed, tens of millions of people displaced, and countless thousands of people raped and enslaved by Western-backed jihadi terrorists who continue running amok. Nope, it was Global Warming that did all that.

Syria: Is Withdrawal Biden’s Next Move?

Middle East Eye:

By withdrawing from Afghanistan, and also with the recent Aukus alliance, Biden has indicated clearly that great power competition, particularly the containment of China, is his primary foreign concern. This means ending involvement in the “forever war” legacies of the “war on terror” like Afghanistan and, possibly, Syria.

Top Republican Calls On Biden Administration To Share Pre-Withdrawal Intelligence Reports On Afghanistan

NBC News:

Congress needs to have access to the intelligence reporting on Afghanistan “to understand how the situation deteriorated so quickly and why the Administration made the decisions they did regarding the disastrous evacuation,” Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, the ranking Republican on the Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote in a letter to the administration that was obtained by NBC News.

Addressing Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and National Intelligence Director Avril Haines, McCaul wrote that Congress is interested in the U.S. intelligence assessments and diplomatic messages “to see exactly how these products were reflected in the Biden Administration’s contingency and worst-case scenario planning.”

After Renegade Province’s Fall, Panjshir Resistance Leaders Surface In Tajikistan

The National Interest:

Indeed, if there is a logical next step for the Panjshir “resistance,” it appears to be a political rather than a military one. Massoud has hired a Washington lobbyist to represent his case on Capitol Hill; he has also spoken with several prominent legislators, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), an outspoken supporter of the resistance against the Taliban. Several prominent Republicans, including Graham and Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), have called on President Joe Biden to recognize Saleh and Massoud as Afghanistan’s rightful leaders—with Waltz even asserting that he would use his position to bankroll an anti-Taliban insurgency.

The Afghan Republic is dead. We do not need to bankroll any more death in Afghanistan.

Tulsa Public Schools Looking For Feedback On Native American-Based Mascots At Two Schools

2 News:

Daniel Webster’s “Warrior” and Central’s “Brave” are up for debate as the district works “to build understanding around the meaning of mascot to school community, the history of school and mascot, understanding of cultural awareness, and the larger implications of Native American mascots.”

Always remember: if the mascot is Confederate-related, then it is unacceptable because it glorifies the Confederates; if the mascot is Native American-related, then it is unacceptable because it victimizes the Native Americans.
